Grace Church's

Mission and Values

(April 2006)

Our Mission:

Living in Community, Growing in Christ,

Serving in the World

Our Values:

We believe in God who is within,

around and beyond us.

We claim God's power to transform and sustain us as agents of justice and peace in the world.

We are committed to the ministries

of the laity and the clergy

through Biblical preaching, life-giving sacraments and congregation prayer. We claim our vocations and commit ourselves to leadership in worship, participation in the life of the church, and individual and communal transformation through spiritual discipline and action.

We welcome and affirm inclusive, diverse, community.

We celebrate the gifts of individuals of all ages, races, abilities, ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations. We support each other on our life-long spiritual journeys. We seek to be inclusive in our language, attitudes, and actions.

Grace is a small, intimate parish whose strength is derived mainly from the support and commitment of its members. We want to share this religious community with all who come from the rapidly growing surrounding neighborhood around us or from metro Chicago. Some of our immediate parish goals:
View of the altar from the side
--- We wish to continue to enhance our reputation as a distinct urban parish. Grace's liturgical mix of Episcopalian tradition with a willingness to embrace new ideas, its sharing of facilities with other faith communities, and its outreach in the community are all examples of elements that give the church the special character that we cherish. The award-winning building brings the curious city visitor and tourist alike to seek out GracePlace. Grace Church's uniqueness retains many parishioners even as they move great distances away
View of chapel from the behind the pews
--- We are committed  to the faith development of children and adults. Whether through Bible study, discussion groups, or programs which function within the worship service, we want to increase knowledge of Jesus, our understanding of the Episcopal church and our roles as Christians in this life we are given.

--- Grace Church is very involved in community activities and interests. The GracePlace Community Center and the chapel provide gathering places that enrich the mind and spirit and reflect the vibrancy of the South Loop neighborhood. Grace is truly a place where the community can come together.

Who are we?
Our parish members have come from diverse backgrounds. Many Grace Church regulars come from Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist or other denominations.   Grace is one of the few churches available in the Loop area.   Grace's services draw a significant number of visitors who are staying in nearby hotels for conventions of conferences, many of whom are drawn by the reputation of our architecturally award-winning sanctuary.

We are happy that you've found us and we welcome you to our congregation.  We want to be a "home for your spirit in the South Loop."
